Ok well basically what you did is you forgot to do the little FORMAT C:\ command... instructions:
1. insert disk
2. when it asks about install options goto partioning or something and click format (this erases EVERYTHING)
3. click install...
4. wait...
5. wait...
6. consider getting linux
7. wait...
9. restart and voila windows xp is at your command (as much as a windows computer can be anyway)

Also you should check to make sure all your drivers are upto date and running... If you require assistance of a more detailed nature don't hesitate to pester me via PM i'll be more than happy to assist you with snarky and sarcastic comments all the way through (j/k) ;)
