Well, I've had some limited experience with it. I wasn't really a "popular" kid, but I had friends in all cliques and got along with pretty much everybody.  

But when you slowly start to hang out with just the "popular" clique, there's something about it that makes you develop a superiority complex.  

All of a sudden the person you thought you knew doesn't want to be seen with you in public because they think it will damage their social image. They think they have to be seen with "cooler" people only.

Now, I'm not sure if this is what's happening here, so don't take my word for it, but I think this might be the start of that.
