For free I don't sorry, but lately I have been playing Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth II both online and off. I play the Rise of the Witch King expansion more than the original though

Which are FPS's. He's looking for RTS games.

For free, I got nothing - well, legally that is.
For epic RTS, look no further than the likes of Supreme Commander or Dawn of War

Download for free?  You should give Gunbound a shot.  It's no Command & Conquer (it's more like Worms), but it's oodles and oodles of fun.

There are a few OS initiatives for the linux platform that are pretty good. Other than that, get some money, and look in the bargain section at your local game store - the stuff that's one step away from abandonware, that step being fucking EA. 3 for a tenner, good buys. I recommend Dungeon Keeper, Homeworld, Nexus (can be bought on Steam), Empire Earth, Age of Empires, any + all the Total War games... the list could easily go on. Definitely snap up any blizzard RTS you see.
