i have a blackberry pearl.  if i get a miniSD and put it in the phone.  (assuming all the virus and system security checks are good) then connect it to my computer-a macbook.  my computer should recognize it as a mass storage usb device.  does that sound right?

It should do, OS X should mount it as a removable drive on your desktop if you connect it with a USB cable, though it might not work as Macs aren't inherently compatible with Blackberrys.

Why are you buying the memory card then? I don't understand. Buy the memory card if you need to use it for storing photos, music, etc.

it doesn't work any other way without downloading stuff that i can't guarentee the safety of.  i don't want to screw up my computer.  i could buy a program but the sd is cheaper.

What are you trying to do? Program for what? The program will sync your Mac with your blackberry, and SD card will NOT do that. It might let you access the SD card, but you won't be able to do anything else apart from transfer files.
