February 7th, 2004 "Inmember" Code Added, Hilarity Ensues
One the 7th of February in 2004 Anthem discovered a new source code that David had recently added to LiveWire, for reasons unknown (although possibly it was added in order to facilitate the creation of topics intended for all members to read). The basis behind the [inmember] source code was that [inmember] would be seen by logged-in members as their own name. For instance, Anthem would have seen [inmember] on the forums as 'Anthem.'Realizing the exploitation potential of such a code, she quickly made a topic called "Please Read: A Rant About Someone."The contents of the topic were as follows:
"[inmember] YOU STUPID SHIT
You know what [inmember], I am sick and tired of listening to your shit, you think you are so cool but in reality you are just a stupid pathetic idiot. Why don't you shut up for a second, you boast about mindless shit all the time and you don't realize nobody wants to waste their time on you.
Do everyone a favour and poke your eyes out and cut your hands off."
Everyone who clicked on the topic read [inmember] as their own name and naturally thought that they in particular were the targets of the rant. The majority of the early replies were angry, asking Anthem why she made a topic dedicated to insulting them; at the time they did not realize what was truly happening. Most of us who talked to her on a regular basis were struck with the question "What did we do to make her mad?"
After a few pages people started to get it (quoting the original post would give clues to the code) and the smarter ones among us, mostly IRC regulars, began using the code as well in the same topic, leading to much confusion among those who still were in the dark.Eventually most of the regular posters got the practical joke and we all started trying to explain it to the people who hadn't yet understood it.Even by the second from the last page there were still some people who didn't get it.One person in particular never, ever got it at all and even made a post about it in the Serious Forum - where serious situations are supposed to be discussed.Even after that, she was still in the dark and I think it caused her to leave LiveWire.
The [inmember] code was disabled four days later by David because it was "being abused."This abuse is, of course, a reference to said hilarious [inmember] topic.
