Thing is, though, at least in that article, it didn't exactly make it sound like she was giving them any reason to think that this stuff was anything more than her going through a fad...when her father saw the cuts on her arms, she basically said, "Oh, it's just an initiation, it won't happen again." And, frankly, remembering being a teenager myself and watching two more grow up in my house, mood swings and "sometimes I just want to kill myself!" are not out of the ordinary.

Now, I'm not saying that the parents aren't partially to blame here, because obviously, they seemed a little thick, but I don't know that the information we're given can really point to her being devastated over her parents' apparent (heh) lack of concern. What we're given is a picture of a pretty stereotypical thirteen-year-old emo kid who didn't get that hanging yourself isn't a good way to deal with your problems.

Or hugely in denial. Nobody wants their child to be "that kid," the one who actually is depressed and who ends up living a miserable life. It's easier to just say "Oh, okay, it won't happen again," than it is to accept that your kid might have issues, and that you might be making those issues worse.
