I was reading a brief history of time and hawking said that any time before the big bang occurred is irrelevant, and I'm not really sure why this is. Anyone care to explain?

Because before the big bang time and space in this universe didn't exist so why would we worry about it?

Probably because we can't get far enough away from this planet to discover anything else about it anyway, so there is no point in worrying about it.

As far as I'm concerned, that is.

Well, I don't think there was time before the Big Bang Event, unless you take into account multiverses.  Many stars were formed in the first second of the Big Bang, it expanded very rapidly.  This is known as Planck Time.  A Planck Unit is generally regarded as one of the smaller units of measurement.  There are very few units smaller than Planck's ones.

Great book.
Time didn't occur before the big bang. So there was no time before it. It's weird just try not to think too much about it or you'll be awake all night.

Because there was nothing. Absolute nothing

...in the beginning, there was nothing.  Space was dull.  And boring.  So God decided to curse us all with life.

The way I heard it described once is that asking what came before the Big Bang is like asking what's farther north than the North Pole.  I don't understand what that's supposed to mean anymore, but it's something to think about.

I disagree with Hawking.

He has been wrong before. The one that I know of is to a university PhD student.
