That's vile. How should they leave such an influential decision like that to the students?

And making him stand in front of the class... there is NOTHING worse to a child than the disdain of your peers.

I feel awful for that poor child.

Fuck that teacher, fuck those students, fuck that school for allowing it to happen.

this is really not right. This kid has a right to his education just the same a everyone else. he has feelings, just like everyone else, he DOES NOT have 'absense of feelings' syndrome. He has asperges and and it was VERY wrong of the teacher to suggest they take a vote. id class that as professional misconduct tbh but i dont know. Maybe even disability discrimination? ive got a physical disability but anything like this would really wind me up

Oh, right, so you'll be happy to go without all the extra support that the Government gives to the disabled? I mean I know where you're coming from on the whole 'not worse just different' angle but that kind of relativistic view has some serious flaws in it.

Anyway, this is some seriously shoddy journalism.

Yeah, probably. A lot of what psychologists teach people with Asperger's is what open-minded peers could do, tbh.

And the depression aspect, for me at least, comes from feeling unaccepted by a majority (not all, but people who generally have bad attitudes and are too ignorant to bother to try and understand others).

That could help with better friendships. So :/

Yea that's really terrible. If you can't handle kids, you shouldn't ever have become a teacher. Not only that, but that kid is probably suffering from emotional trauma.

i think it really varies and we cant properly judge with so little knowledge of the incident.

its wrong to dicriminate against anyone including those who are disabled, but if they are creating an environment for the other students where the other students are unable to work, then it may be necessary for the disabled person to go to a disabled school so other students are able to learn

That is wrong. Even worse is that it is encouraging children from a young age to discriminate against those with special needs.

I am quite worried that a number of people have voted that this is fine. How is it fine for a group of five year olds to be allowed to vote a member of their class out? How is it okay to teach five year olds to be nasty about those with special needs and to discriminate against them? While, yes, sometimes it is better for children to be taught in a special school, I don't think it can ever be okay for five year olds to decide this. If a teacher is struggling to teach a child with special needs, they should discuss it via the proper channels, not via a group of kids.

Children with autism or any other special need/disability should not be excluded from school unless there is absolutely NO other option. Did the school hire someone to support him in lessons? Did they train the teacher how to cope with him?

I believe that children with special needs should be main streamed until it would no longer be of benefit to them and would be detrimental for the other children. My sister (who has Down's syndrome) was in a mainstream school until the age of seven and I believe it had a positive outcome for her and the other children (who learnt how to deal with someone with Down's and consequently how to be more accepting).

Mainstream school is obviously not suitable for everyone, but at the age of five I believe a child with autism (and a variety of other special needs) would benefit from a mainstream environment WITH THE APPROPRIATE SUPPORT. However special schools after a certain age (when the child is no longer able to cope with mainstream) are quite often the best option as the teachers there are a lot better equipped to cope with the needs of their students. My cousin has Asperger's and was mainstreamed until the age of 11. During her last years in a mainstream junior school she REALLY struggled and was bullied... she refused to go to school by the end of it. The school was really not the right place for her and didn't provide the appropriate support. She has since gone to a specialist school for young people with autism and has grown up so much.

In conclusion I believe five is too young for a child to be taken out of mainstream education and this is most definitely a disgusting way to go about it.

Sorry if this comes across as being a bit soap box-y but I do kinda have strong opinions on stuff like this.

My cousin has aspergers and if that happened here there would be a moral uproar. Aspergers is recognised as a disability and allowances should be made and accommadated for.
