Got an old laptop I want to get working

Turn it on, it tries to read HDD, switches to FDD, and then asks for a system disk.

The book says it runs DOS 5.0, and it came with three floppies labeled MS DOS VERSION 5.0 RSAO1US, disk 1/2/3.

It also came with 7 floppies labeled Microsoft Windows Operating System - Version 3.1

It doesn't respond to any of these and I don't even really know which one it wants anyway.

Help, is something likely to be wrong with its FDD or is there something else it wants?

I'd recommend calling the manufacturer

No, I have a laptop. I don't NEED one, I want to get that one working though. It's a project.

Screw old windows.  Install some good small clean OS on there.  If you just wanna get it working to see what's up, get a linux live cd or something those are quite convenient.  Knoppix is a very decent one.

The T2000SX is in a performance class of its own. The 16 MHz i386 SX processor and optional i387 SX coprocessor provide the speed and processing power modern organizations are demanding to run advanced applications. Memory starts at 1 MB, and can be expanded to an impressive 9 MB with easy-to-use RAM cards. A 20 or 40 MB hard disk ensures that programs and data have plenty of space and are instantly available. The T2000SX employs the latest high-capacity nickel-hydrogen battery technology to keep battery life long and battery weight down. The high-resolution black and white VGA screen is a marvel of readability, using a special sidelit LCD technology for clear, bright viewing in all lighting conditions. The keyboard, too, confirms Toshiba's excellent reputation in design and functionality with a full set of 88 keys, including 12 function keys and 8 dedicated cursor keys. All these conform to a layout tested for user-friendliness, so there will be no need to learn new positions or awkward key combinations.

Holy shit!

You could sell that thing to a collector, i don't think recent windows, linux, or any OS made after 1992 will run on it. I wouldn't try to fix it for personal use....

I would try the win3.1 disks, it shouldn't need to install dos more than once, assuming it has already been installed. Mind you the win3.1 disk might be dammaged with age, check it on another computer to see if it is at least working. You could probably find a free download for win 3.1 on the net.
