Its really simple to explain.

By the sounds of things your Buick is a 3 speed auto so I'm guessing it has 1, 2, then drive.

1 is 1st gear which is pretty self explanatory it has more revs as its the first gear so its natural, 2nd gear will give more economy then 1st but acceleration will be reduced, and drive is basically the combination of the gears but it changes gears by it self and tends to be fairly low, if you floor it it should drop down a gear to get more revs(more revs, more acceleration).

What ever you do, do not floor it in drive then go to 2 or 1 that is just extremely stupid(if you ask why, then read this response agian untill you understand).

Personally I'm surprised they don't teach you this when you went for your licence.
