Not only are Macs less likely to get a virus, but since there are more Windows users than Mac users, the amount of computer illiterate people using Windows is also higher, meaning the amount of viruses attributed to Windows users is higher. Virus developers and hackers use this to their advantage, and thus the statistics on Windows vs. Macs when it comes to contracting viruses are skewed towards Windows.

Nobody bothers writing viruses for Macs because nobody gives a damn about them.

Macs CAN get viruses. But who programs programs for Macs? On the down side that means that there aren't many programs for Macs.

Technically yes. There has been a worm. But the only actual VIRUS' were designed by some Apple geeks, that weren't malicious. They were simply proof of concept virus'.

Mac's can get virus's

In fact the first ever virus was written for a older apple computer the predesessor to the mac. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elk_Cloner http://www.newscientist.com/blog/technology/2007/07/many-unhappy-returns.html  )

Today, though the windows operating system is the most popular operating systems around, therefore if someone was to write a virus, they would design it to run on windows for maximum effect and spread.

there are still virus's written to infect mac's though, just not as many. this should not make you decide mac over PC. there is generally more software and easier upgrades in PC's than mac,s and any PC with a half decent anti virus is perfectly secure.

Macs don't get virus's for the same reason your calculator doesn't get viruses.

My calculator does not connect to the internets.

My calculator does not run Linux.

My calculator knows what's good for it.

My calculator is not a series of tubes.

Have at you!

Mac's are less likely to get a virus also because of their secure unix base. Even if a Virus was writted for a Mac it would be very hard for it to spread. Especialy since Mac's files are stand alone usualy and don't require installation. And most people using Mac's are smart enough to not open every freakin file they see.

Being Unix has almost nothing to do with it really, it to do with you not being able to run as root.

And what do you think installation involves? Because last i looked it it just copying files to the right places and sometimes a few reg keys. Note reg keys were made years ago (windows 3.1 in fact) to get away from the file based preferences that macs used. It was deemed to be a bit of a mess.

From what I understand of Windows Vista it is also impossible to run as root, you can't read or write or really access files in that directory in any way shape or form.

On the other windows platforms you could of course.

Yes, they can. But very very rarely. Normally the person has to be very ignorant, and totally unaware of whats going on.

So over all, they CAN, but they are VERY rare, and very hard to get.

Note: Macs and PC's do not use the same OS, so macs cannot get viruses designed for PC's, vice versa. Just for you people who are not familiar with computers.

Vista does allow you to run as root, the difference with Vista over older version of windows is firstly that you don't run as root as default and secondly, they have stopped people creating odd installs that you need to run as root for. The security model on Xp was quite good, but so many manufacturers didn't create their installations properly and so the install scattered files all over the place and required the user to be running as root.

They have clamped down on this, hence some application just don't run on Vista.
