I feel like I'm having a mental breakdown or somehting.  I'm not trying to be over dramatic.. but I start college in a week, and lately I've been so stressed out, I don't know what's wrong with me.  I'm losing weight, I don't have much energy, I feel like crying all the time.  I'm usually so happy and energetic, but people are driving me crazy, bossing me around like I have no opinion.. my best friend, my neighbor, everyone around me.  I think my parents think there's something wrong with me, I'm not really grouchy, more like sad all the time.

Is it normal to get like this  before you start college?  I'm only 17 and I've always been in tiny private schools.  Maybe that's part of it, I don't know.. but it just feels like so much is happening at once, and nobody cares, everyone's making it harder on me.  It's hard to explain, but I'm not trying to whine.  Just wanted to know if its normal to feel really sad and depressed and stressed out before college starts.

Thanks...

If it makes you feel any better, heres how I look at it. I went to a military boarding school where my graduating class was of 94. I am now heading to VT, where theres about 27000 fellow students. Additionally, Im doing the USAF contract up there, so Ill be getting yelled at while desperately studying hehe. Anyways, the way I look at it, and a good perspective on it for both of us. We have conquered a great challenge in our lives (high school) now Its time to take it to the next level and take on a greater new challenge. Be confident in yourself and take it head on with excitement! Message me if you got questions.

It's a huge change... I have no idea if it's normal, but it sounds reasonable.

it seem like your more stress out and scared about college. and seeing how your fam friends don't see that to help you out, cause you to feel as though life is going off track, but it is normal to feel this way. especially coming from a privet school. you going to witness more drama and work. but you can do it. cause i myself is attending college, and I'm scared and nervous as yourself. but take it as if its a normal thing. like your going into freshman in high school and your meet new people. that is how I'm taken it and seeing it as. cause i myself going into 1st yr in college. remember to breath and count to three and move on w/ your life.

talk to your fam and friends about how you feel. i mean you have to, to get all this stress out.

best of luck.

College is a big step, but once you settle in things should be fine. Just try to think of all the good things that you have to look forward to like meeting new friends.

Hey babe,

College is extension of High School, but better. You'll meet a lot of people who are stress about college. People are actually compassioniate in college and no one should act like they above others. (If they do, those are the very few) You meed a lot of interesting people and get to know about whats real in life and whats not. College life is great and you will make those lifetime friend as they say you meet through college. College work is pretty much reading uand reading. You'll do fine on exams because they usually relate to what you read. Most of the professors are understanding and they will try to help them the best of their ability. YOU'LL DO FINE!!!! and make sure you have fun. That is what is college all about.

It's perfectly normal to feel that way before college.  Especially if you're coming from a small high school.  People seem to always talk about how college was one of the best times of their entire lives... I don't think they were talking about the first semester.

I had a really hard time my first semester.  Everything was new, classes were harder, I was in a long distance relationship, I didn't have any friends, I have much in common with roommate or the people in my section very much, etc, etc.  But I forgot about all that eventually and it's now my mom who reminds me it was hard.

Just try to take things slowly and if you need to don't feel bad about calling your parents or friends from home every single day.  Maybe your parents and friends are a big agitated about you leaving too.  It's often a big change for parents also to have kids leave and go off to college.  Hopefully once you're there things will settle down between everybody since you won't be in as close proximity to them.

You posted this a while ago and so by the time you read this you might already be starting school.  If you want more support come back here and post again.  We'll all be here to listen.

If anything, you're in the majority. It's a culture shock, that's for sure.

I've taken on school, a part-time job and trying to figure out a potential relationship, all while trying to have fun outside of that too. It's getting a little crazy, but we'll see how it goes.

You are not alone. Just relax, reassure yourself that everything will be fine and just go get it!

TAKE A DEEP BREATH!  Then tell everyone that is bossing you around or giving you advice that you are having a mental overload.  College is not so bad.  You'll experience more freedom than what you had in high school and that may be a little frightening but you'll enjoy it.  JUST RELAX.  Before you know it the first month will be over.
