I just graduated high school and I'm beginning classes at a local community college next month.  I got a letter in the mail, telling me that I was awarded $854 from Bright Futures for the Medallion Scholarship.  I'm considered a full-time student, signed up for twelve credit hours.  Each credit hour costs 52 bucks or something, so, after doing the math I realized that my tuition should only cost six hundred something.  My best friend's dad is the VP of the school I'm attending and she told me that the Florida Medallion scholarship pays for 100% at a community college whereas at a university it only pays 75%.  Does anyone know if this is accurate?  Because it could be why I got more money from them.  I could call the financial aid office if no one knows, but I'd rather get feedback from people on here.  Also, I qualify for financial aid from the school and a PELL grant.  This was a thousand dollars.  Sooo, since my tuition and fees are paid for by Bright Futures, will they just send me a check for a thousand bucks or credit it to my account or something?  I know, I know - I'm asking way too many questions!  Thanks in advance! : )

With Bright Futures any money you don't spend is yours. I go to UF, and Bright Futures covers all of my credit costs plus a $300 a semester for books.  I buy my books online or international edition and usually that costs less than the stipend.  I still get a check though, and I use that money for other things.

The basic rule for any scholarship/financial aid is that it can be used for anything as long as you meet the requirements and there are no exceptions for what it has to be paid for.  That's why I never apply for tuition-only scholarships since Bright Futures covers that already.

So keep the money, and use it for other expenses.
