Yet you don't seem to want to take the time to find out each pet store's story. I hate lumping every single one together. I know where my fish come from. I know they are taken care of. Sure, they are in a massive facility, but they are still taken care of. Just because some bad mills abuse animals, doesn't mean all places do. The other favourite pet store of mine recuse half of their animals from the humane society (small and exotic animals). Would you rather have those be killed or set loose? I am totally against puppy mills, pet stores that pack their birds into cages like sardeens, dirty fish tanks and what not. I am against Walmart and the big chain stores that carry animals, because they do not have educated staff or the proper facilities to house them. But I am not going to accuse every pet store of that because I know good ones exist. And it will never get better if people don't try. And people wont try if everyone accuses them of being cruel right off the bat. If those good pet stores send their customers home educated and with a healthy animal, I want to support that. Because it will encourage more people to buy these animals and share the joy of taking care of them. I know there are 3 pet stores in my small area alone that practice safe animal care. I would hate to discourage people from going to stores like that. Those are honest companies who deserve the business. I am not about to generalize every pet store in the world.

Oh my. I completely agree with Raven. NO reputable breeder would EVER EVER EVER sell their puppies to a petstore. The puppies at my local store are never below $1500. Breeder are actually much cheaper in most cases. Hate to burst your bubble OP, but I really don't think you know what you are talking about.

I definitely agree with Raven and OhMyDog. A reputable breeder has a waiting list before they breed and doesn't breed a litter when they feel like it and then scurry to find homes for them, and would not sell to a pet store. And with my own eyes I've seen puppies for sale at pet shops $1200 and more. I think it's sad that a lot of the reasoning for the pet shop pros is pure convenience. Reputable breeders are usually much more reasonasble in prices and there's the lack of health and vet costs that could have been prevented by avoiding a pet shop where the dogs are usually from backyard breeders and puppy mills who don't do the proper health tests before breeding.

Here's another way to look at at: Breeder to do list... -Show the dog. -Earn titles, prove the dogs a worthy specimen of it's breed. -Health test the dog (OFA, CERF...) -Spend several months finding the PERFECT stud who will compliment my bitches temperment and conformation. -Find people interested in puppies and make sure they are committed. -Go through with breeding. -HOPE the birth goes well, HOPE the bitch doesn't die in the process, HOPE the puppies don't die or get sick, HOPE, HOPE, HOPE... -Vet visits by the ton. -Puppies are born. -Raise them, pick up poo, socialize them EVERY DAY, buy expensive products, food, multiple vet visits. -Make a contract that ensure they will nto be bred withought help from original breeder, etc. -Stress!!! -Send puppies to their new home. -Be prepared to take ANY of the puppies produced BACK into my care in the unfortunate event that the new owner can no longer keep them. ------------------------------------------ Now, WHY in the world would a breeder go through all that work, stress, time and money to ship them off to some pet store where some old Joe Shmoe can come and purchase them? He could, in 6 months, dump them off at a shelter, breed them irresponsibly, abuse them...... NO RESPONSIBLE BREEDER WOULD EVER SEND THEIR DOGS TO A PETSTORE. Period. Either go to a shelter, or look for a reputable breeder.
