My dad is an asshole and he set it so only one ip(his laptop) can access the network. How can I set it so my laptop can also enter it. It's considered unsecured(encryption) but it just trys to connect forever then finally stopped. We have a netgear router by the way. I don't really feel like sitting in the family room and plugging into the network where everyone can see what I'm doing. Thanks

Sit in the family room and do it. You just can't look at porn.

Could you try accessing a neighbors internet maybe? Try picking up another signal. I'm not quite sure how to get around that.

Actually, now that I think of it, he might have just encrypted the network, in which case you can easily access the key on his notebook. When you select the network, does it say "security-enabled"? (if you're using XP SP1 or higher)

It's not encrypted. I'm pretty sure it's not passworded. Can I just add another static IP address to it somehow rather than use his IP? How do I find the internal IP address? and after I find it how can I change it? Sorry, about the anonymous posting I didn't realise it was automatic
Ok, on his notebook, double click the wireless icon in the system tray (bottom-right corner), then click on the support tab of the window that pops up. It should give you some info, including the IP, Subnet Mask, and default gateway. Further, you'll want to click on the "details" button, and copy down the DNS servers info. From there, depends on what the subnet mask and the IP is. You should be able to access the router now by typing in the default gateway IP in your web browser (with the wireless up). Post the info here so I can look at it, that'd help a lot in figuring out what to do next (don't worry about anyone stealing it, this is all internal routing, not external, so it doesn't really matter who sees it). The subnet mask, default gateway, and dns servers are especially important. Post edited at 3:04 pm on Oct. 21, 2006 by Stormblazer

O_o: His notebook's IP is 192.168.0.1... that's usually used for a gateway. Weird. Well, first thing to try is to (on your notebook): Double-click the wireless icon, click on properties, then double-click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Select "Use the following IP address," and enter something like 192.168.0.5 or 192.168.0.11 for the IP, 255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask (it'll probably fill in automatically when you click the box), and the Default gateway number you had from your dad's notebook (192.168.0.2). Then fill in the DNS server fields with 24.51.159.139 and 24.41.98.194, and hit OK, then hit OK again (it might take it around 10-20sec), and then try connecting to the wireless network. If that doesn't work, it might mean it's encrypted, or that your dad put restrictions on using the router. In that case, type in 192.168.0.2 (the default gateway) in the web address bar of IE or Firefox on your dad's notebook, that should bring up the router options. Every router's different, so I can't help you much from there, you'll just have to explore the settings. Of course, your dad might have passworded it too, in which case you can't really do anything.
