if it has at least 7 megapixels, it should be a good camera. I have a Fuji, it looks pretty good

ok, megapixels are not the end all, qualification..look for a camera with a good iso range (100-800 is good) also, ask if it has a CCD sensor or CMOS, (CCD is preferrable) another good thing to look for is how fast betwen pictures the camera takes to process.  Nikon has always been excellent in the SLR area, but not necessarily in the easier more space efficient coolpix cameras, if you're going for an SLR get either the D40, D80, or D200 (depending on price range).  other than that, i'm not sure the qualifications of the sony or fujifilm...check to see if there's a ritz or kits camera around anywhere, they are the best when it comes to camera anything

oh, i forgot to tell you, anything with a sensor over 5 megapixels is unnecessary, really, becasue the sensor is teh same size, they're just cramming more pixels into that size and image quality is lost...ask how big the sensor is...chances are it will not be bigger than 512 pixels...and even that's a large sensor.  And really, you wont even need more than 5 MP unless you're making prints larger than 10x12 then you can start looking into stuff like the D80 or D200 (Nikon)

Also, you should of mentioned zoom. You want more optical, then digital zoom.

You don't provide any relevant information to get an intelligent answer. What kind of camera are you looking for, how much do you intend to spend, what kind of photography are you going to do. Sticking with the name brands will help, but that doesn't narrow it down much. Before you go shopping, I would suggest that you go to some camera websites and do some research on what's out there and what you need.

QFT!!! thank you, imakethetest66, he's absolutely right, digital zoom is nearly worthless...all it does is double pixels which makes for fuzzy, ucky looking pictures...

my dad showed me this site... he used it when he bought a camera, and now i am using it to figure out the camcorder i should buy...

the reviews on it are really good and unbiased... and there are really good search-y things (sorry--no better way to describe it!). It is awesome, and has proved to be very helpful. they have both critics and users reviewing.

don't use the manufacturers information.. it is usually really biased!!
