You do not recall correctly. IE6 is iexplore.exe; explorer.exe is the Windows visual shell.

As far as an active x plugin for Firefox, there are a few out there. Firefox does not need ActiveX, only the sites requiring IE use ActiveX, such as Windows Update.

I'm not sure why "made by Microsoft" is such a problem.  I mean, if you can run I.E., you're using Windows, which is already made by Microsoft.  If you want to avoid stuff made by Microsoft, use an operating system that's not made by Microsoft and as such won't even run I.E.

Also from a developers point of view it is required to test websites on multiple Browsers to ensure compatabillity.

Also i belive BBCs Iplayer requires IE, also ITV requires Silverlight which is IE only i think.

Solution: User Agent Switcher.  Basically tricks the site into thinking you're using IE, but really are using Firefox.  It's worked wonders for me.

You don't need IE.  I can get into my hotmail account from Linux, which most definitely does not have IE.  It works with Firefox or Opera.
