You're asking for a lot there, if it's a mentor-figure you seek.

I recommend buying a book that takes you through the basics. That helps you get your head around how PHP functions, and then you'll understand the web based tutorials written by lesser authors.

Just to build upon what allsmiles said, choose your books very carefully.

You will almost certainly want something with a lot of examples in there. "Web Database Applications with PHP and MySQL" from O Reilly is excellent in this respect. It sums up everything in a big Web Application from Specification to Code.

You need more than a syntactic grasp of the language!
