I had vb at school and had loads of fun making crappy little programs with it.
Anyone know if there is a free version I can use at home? My dad said he'd steal a copy from work but he borrowed the wrong disk (it was a huge fucking programming manual for about 10 different languages instead)

I do not know of a free version, but while at Barnes and Noble the other day, I noticed one of the VB books came with a free copy of visual basic .Net. You may want to look into that. I'm not sure the price of the book though.
