Is your laptop wireless? I know it is a dumb question, but the laptop could be diagnosing its own problem wrong. If not, have you checked that the wire you usually use to connect to the internet is plugged in both at the back of your laptop and at the router/modem?

That's exactly what I was thinking. Your laptop probably has a wired connection port whether you use it or not so it will always display that as not being connected if you're not using it.

So what do I do? Just leave it and wait for the internet to come back on?
No, that 'Local Area Network' is a completely different connection than the Wireless Connection. If your internet isn't working then it's because the wireless connection has a problem. You'll have to go to 'network connections' in Windows and look at the status of the Wireless connection part.
Yes, I just said not connected and when I went to connect it, it comes up: Windows cannot find any networks. Then I diagnosed it again and this came up: this computer does not have a wireless network adapter installed and configured. [Ok, that is different to what came up first]

I wonder would the problem have anything to do with me not installing updates. Hm...
