You mean languages as in plural.

No official national language in the US, sir (though English is official in Louisiana (Goddamned non-cajun southerners...)).

Since there's no real nation in America, how can there be a "national" language? The majority speaks English, that's all.

I didn't say official. Yes, the beauracrats refuse to adopt an official language on papers. Whether it's official is completely irrelevant to my point, english is the de facto language of the country, and thus the language of the nation/country--- national language. I'm speaking of the reality of the situation, not of some moot political point.

Hold on a second. I had to write the president to inform him that America is not in fact a nation and therefore can no longer serve in the UN.

You're being a little strict in your interpretation of the word nation in the context I used it. Colloquial usage of the word nation generally exempts it from that "singular cohesivie cultural unity" requisite, and makes it synonymous with country/state. Hense, American is a "nationality", national anthem, etc.

It's not irrelevant that we haven't adopted an official language. De facto means nothing, as there is no national language, only the lingua franca. The lingua franca isn't the national language until it is made so officially.

I wasn't saying that it's irrelevant in general, I think whether it's official or not is important, but I think that it being unofficial is irrelevant to the point I was making, that english is the national language because it is the language rooted in the founding of our country and it is the most widely spoken language by a huge margin. I think you can have an official national language and/or an unofficial national language.

English is not a lingua franca INSIDE of the US for its citizens. The vast majority of American citizens speak english natively, therefore, it is not a second-tongue medium. Anyhow, I think de facto means something. I think official means something too, but I'm not one of those people that think that it's not a war, and could never be one, unless it's DECLARED by congress. If you get my point. I think the reality of the situation still exists irregardless of whether or not a couple people recognize the pattern of the whole nation.

Most of the middle aged and older do.
Younger people mostly don't.
