I'm heading into college shortly and was wondering if a laptop really makes a difference in the classroom.

A laptop makes all the difference. It's easy to take notes. Plus, it's great for writing papers. You can take it to the library to work on your school work instead of hanging around the dorm distractions. You will find it quite useful, I can assure you.

I had a desktop already and I wasn't really in the mood to shell out for a laptop, so I figured I'd just bring my desktop.

Over the tear, I really regretted not having SOMETHING... we would always to to the library and get resources, or we would go over each others houses and write papers... every time everyone had their laptops while I was sitting there with a pencil and paper. No fun at all.

If you can afford it, I highly suggest getting a laptop. It makes EVERYTHING easier.

Not to mention you can use them to take bomb ass notes.

Exactly. Taking notes were so easy. People type faster than they write. So you can get more of what the teacher is saying. It's easier to organize when you get home too. Writing down notes can get messy. If you have it all right there on the laptop, you can rearrange, cut, re-word etc. It's fabulous.

No.  I did four years of college before getting my laptop.  Now, when I use it, I find I do worse not better than I would otherwise.

It can be a good tool, but it is FAR from necessary.

There are tons of students who take laptops to class. It's totally normal and allowed.

I would say it would make a difference, and it could be really convenient... not just for class (I prefer taking notes for class), but the fact that you can take it to the library and do it there, instead of dealing with trying to get a library time or something.

Likewise, if you ever get tired of sitting inside a room writing a paper (because you'll most likely be doing a bit of that), then it gives you the freedom to move around a bit :).

Personally, it would be nice to have a laptop for me, because I have a two hour commute one way... but they're expensive, so I can live without one :P.
