I want a pet rodent

I just brought a nice little cage for a small rodent and am planning on buying a furry friend to inhabit that cage very soon.
I am not sure whether to get a mouse, a hamster, a rat or a gerbil. What would everyone recommend? Does it really matter all that much?
I MIGHT even get two to keep each other company.

What about a guinea pig? They're cute and they don't seem to bite very much.

I say a rat. They're cute and make surprisingly good pets.

woo my job in a pet shop comes in use once more!

Ah it doesnt matter so much what u get - mice and rats can both be stinky, but good pets!

Ive got 2 gerbils n i like tha, cos im not always here so they've got company with each other, arent biters, are nosey lil things and entertaining to watch!
(also debatably more intelligent than rats)

Russian or other dwarf hamsters along with mice need a glass/plastic cage or one with narrow bars so they cant escape.

Syrian hamsters are popular cos theyre cute chubsters that soon get tame!

whatever you plan to get, i think you should plan to get two, so that they don't get lonely.
mice smell pretty bad, so i wouldn't recommend it if you're not willing to clean their cage. rats are pretty cool though.

I imagine if u put them together it could happen, size for one wouldn't make it difficult!

And it scents and smells aint it, if a mouse is put in a rats teritory then its likely the rat is going to 'defend it' (aka eat the mouse!)

Theres always exceptions!

Saying this, we had 2 mice in work - 1 was TINY and the other quite big. We came back after the weekend and this dinky mouse had eaten the big one!

uh, if you want two, you'd better get them from the same cage so they don't eat each other. If it's anything bigger than a hamster, you might want to get a larger cage.

Each day is a new canvas to paint upon.
Make sure your picture is full of life and happiness,
and at the end of the day you don't look at it
and wish you had painted something different.

Get a hamster. There's no way you'd be able to keep rats in a little cage. They need a big cage. My sister has one rat and his cage is pretty big. Two would need an even bigger cage.

How big is the cage you bought?
You said 'little', so I would say do not get a rat, especially not two. They need a very large cage, and even larger for a pair. At least the size of a good sized rabbit cage. Any smaller will cause them to become depressed (yes, rodents become depressed) because they cannot have any sort of room, or fun, in a small cage.

Even a hamster, in my educated opinion, should not be kept in a small cage. They are unable to hold much, and hamsters like to  keep themselves occupied.

I have a rat. I had two but they hated each other so we had to give one away. They really are sweet pets. They like to cuddle and as long as you clean them and their cage regularly they wont stink.  They are very entertaining to watch too.
