I need some help understanding the MPEG thing, well not really understanding but i'll explain..

I uploaded a MPEG-1 video to youtube and it failed saying invalid format, But I've uploaded MPEG vids before and they worked.. It's obviously not MPEG-1 that I used before, and I was wondering if there's a way to tell if it's MPEG-1 or 2 or whatever because the file format only says .MPEG.

Thanks, sorry if it's not understandable, let me know and I'll try to explain again!

Youtube is supposed to be smart enough an auto-convert files to a supported format, but sometimes it has issues.

Just because a file is labeled one thing doesn't mean the encoding of the video is identical to all other files encoded the same way. In other words, not all MPEG-1 files are the same, so while youtube might accept one file, another file will give it trouble.

Not trying to patronize, but make sure the file length is below the limit, along with the file size, and possibly try uploading the video again.

If that doesn't work, then I really don't have much of a clue other than to convert the video to another type yourself before attempting to upload it again.

In answer to your original question, I don't know.

If you're in Windows, right click on the flle and select properties. Click the More Info tab, and it should have the specific codec there. Also, it's possible to have different codecs and an MPEG encapsulation (ie, the extension may be MPEG, but the codecs might be different). So this time the codec might be different, with the same extension and YouTube doesn't accept that codec, which is why it might not work.

You could try to use a video converter like http://www.zamzar.com to transcode it into something that YouTube will accept.

i think right-click > properties will tell you which is which.

and if it doesn't work, then maybe try converting it to a different format?
abc 3gp/mpeg4 converter is good for that.

Thanks everyone who helped. I've been having trouble with this vid, but in answer to one of your questions about the video length and stuff.. It's only 30 MB and 4 minutes long. :]
