A year behind...

It's weird... all my friends have finished their first year of college/university, and I'm just about to start.

I sometimes feel kind of bad, almost pathetic at the thought of it.  I mean, it's only a year, and it's not the end of the world.  But sometimes I wish I had just gone the first time around... but I also know that I benefitted a great deal from this year off in many ways.  But I still can't shake the feeling that I'm 'behind'...

Anyone else ever have this feeling?  Do you know if it goes away...?

If you start meeting people who are the same year as you, you won't feel as bad about being a year behind.

All my friends finished their final years this year, so does my younger sister.

I'm just starting my second year in March

I know what you mean. I started elementary school a year late because I was in a strange pre-elementary program. So for all throughout school I was always a year older than everybody. I got that "getting a late start" feeling a lot. I regretted it a lot for a while. So I'm in the same boat as you. After you've been out of HS for a while, the feeling is becomes pretty irrelevant- because you realize your success in life isn't time-based or doesn't pertain to how other people are doing. HS is sort of a collective social arrangement, you compare yourself constantly to the thousand kids constantly surrounding you, but once you're out on your own, none of that matters, because everybody is no longer "one age group", it's everybody from all different ages all fending for themselves and you fit somewhere in that puzzle. Making something of yourself is all on you and doesn't matter how or where the other pieces in the puzzle compare to you as far as where and when their success started developing in relation to yours.

I don't particularly care anymore. After HS, I fucked around for another year, then I joined the military. So I was 20 by the time I joined, when most kids joined at 18, so then I was "2 years behind". By the time I get out of the military I'll be 24, so if I go back to college I'll be like 6 years behind lol. It's just the way the ball rolls, it's not important, you shouldn't worry about being behind other people, as long as you accomplish what you want.

I did another year at school because I fucked up a bit and didn't want to go to a crappy Uni. It was hard that year when all of my friends were coming back from Uni talking about it and stuff but once I got to Uni myself it seemed insignificant. I mean I wasn't ready to go to Uni when they did and I would probably have had a miserable time. also a lot of my friends went to Scottish Unis where they do 4 years, so I will be finishing at the same time as them anyway.
