it doesn't help.
Who are you to say it doesn't help, a medical professional? Whoops, looks like you just erred. Either professional opinions are necessary and you have no room to speak about another's mental health, or professional opinions are not necessary and we can all speculate.
Maybe you should stop taking only a line from my response, and reply to it all. Unless you have nothing to say to the rest of it.
I did reply to the whole thing; that's all you said. Do I really need to clutter everything up by quoting your entire post? "Even if they diagnose themselves, they still aren't taking meds" (therefore it doesn't help) "they are still in the same state of mind," (therefore it doesn't help) "who says that once they diagnose themselves they wont cut or anything?" (if they cut, it obviously didn't help) "That will probably give more reason for them to do that. If they think they have a disorder, they will just assume they are more fucked up and want to abuse themselves or others." (Therefore, diagnosing oneself doesn't help) "All diagnosing yourself is is a block to the real world. It doesn't deal seriously with anything, " (doesn't deal seriously with anything = doesn't help) So quoting all of it was not necessary because it was all saying the same thing, and I did reply to all of it. I don't want to turn this in to a discussion about forum etiquette though, so I won't say any more. Regardless, you should think about where you stand. If you argue that a professional medical opinion gives more validity to someone's condition then that's fine, but holding this standpoint also comes with admitting that without being a medical professional, your opinion is worth LESS (ie. you cannot say that these kids self-diagnosing themselves does or does not help them cope with their issues).

But then again, this is where you are just acting stupid, you can't say that they can. You're not making sense, you're arguing something that you yourself can't even be sure of. I agree that I am as well, but I have way more backup than you do.

When have I been taking either side?
Your position, in a nutshell: "Many people claim they have conditions without actually being diagnosed with these conditions. I, however, have been formally diagnosed. It bothers me that these people go around claiming they have something when they haven't been formally diagnosed because it makes light of a serious issue." but you also said that "Even if they diagnose themselves ... it doesn't help." In other words, you are 'diagnosing' these people; you are claiming that whatever they are doing "doesn't help" even without knowing for sure. You are assuming just as much as these people are, and therefore you have taken the opposite position from earlier.
And what are you claiming, that it does help? And I did not say in any way it makes light of a serious situation, you said that. Post edited at 4:05 pm on July 3, 2008 by californication

So all you're saying is that it's okay if people diagnose themselves because it possibly could help them? That doesn't make sense, because people who have been medically diagnosed, it could go either way for them too.

I agree. People shouldn't talk about having a mental illness unless they have had it diagnosed by a psychiatrist. I have suffered severe depression and anxiety and when people say it's not real it kind of hurts, because I wish it wasn't real, fuck.

I don't exactly have diagnosed OCD though, I do know I have odd habits and compulsions. Take for example, if any object is too close to the ledge of a table or something, I have to move it away from it because I always get this paranoia that it's going to fall. But having weird habits doesn't make you OCD.

I swear half of the stuff I see on here is not true. Well that is a given, but when they talk about disorders, diseases, depression... people take it way too far and say that have schizophrenia, OCD, manic depression. Have you got tested by a doctor, by professionals, who say that you have it? I honestly doubt it. I have schizophrenia, my friend has aspergers, my aunt has OCD. They were tested with it, they don't just show some small minimal signs and then suddenly go around saying they have OCD. Organizing your lip gloss a certain way does not mean you have OCD. Fucking hell These are serious things people need to live with, don't take them so casually, so lightly.
its true that, for some of us, sure we have issues like these and more in our lives. but for 1 to say to another, "it will be o.k. you will get passed it". i tell those people, go walk in their shoes for a mile and THEN what u gotta say then?? it may be "easier said than done", FOR YOU, not them.
