She has a Dell Inspiron 1525, few years old I'd imagine.. Every time it starts up, it has this : Windows Error Recovery Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause. If windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, startup repair can help diagnose and fix the problem. If power was interrupted during startup, choose start windows normally. (use the arrow keys to highlight your choice.) Launch startup repair (recommended) Start windows Normally Both choices lead to this : A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If tihs screen appears again, follow these steps: Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation, or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. Technical information: *** STOP: 0x00000024 (0c00290444, 0x844BD9E0, 0XC0000102, 0x00000000) Can anyone help me with this? Any help is much appreciated.

So reinstall windows? Better yet, spam F8 when loading up and try and get into safe mode. When there, do system recovery.
If you reinstall windows, you lost LITERALLY everything. It's essentially a full hard drive wipe. Safe mode like buffet boy said, and then run a virus scanner.
HEY I edited and said SafeMode. I'm not Buffet Boy.

It's a file system error. Try to boot into safemode and run chkdsk.

I know, tis why I gave you credit! OMG.... I must need sleep.... I'm sorry hehe. Regardless, if you do a system recovery or completely reinstall windows, it's basically the same as wiping the drive. Not ideal if you have stuff that doesn't have a backup.

Get your IT friend to connect the hard drive from the laptop to a PC, copy the important files, then re-install windows.

Nah just tell him to use the install disc and boot it into windows and run chkdsk and let it fix it.
