There is nothing wrong with the radio, I listen to it sometimes (in the car, play it in the bathroom when I am taking a shower...etc) however, he said Saliva and Drowning Pool are less mainstream when they are exactly the opposite. They are extremely mainstream pop-metal. I am simply saying, he has not gone to the metal found past the radio, where the true talent is at. Odviously they have some talent, or something which gives them record sales, but if you dive deeper, you often find the less popular metal is far more complex and moving. So I think I can label it 'crap' cuz I have given it a chance. Where do you think I started?? I started by listening to the radio and watching some dumb 'Shark Attack" music video show that used to be on tv. I was happy with it at first, then friends suggested some less popular bands, and I realize there is a huge difference. Popmetal is just like pop punk, pop hip hop, pop rap (I could go on), all of it is made to sell records, catchy little tunes that get stuck in your head.
Yeah, I see what you mean. But I've actually like, never heard either Saliva or Drowning Pool played on the radio. Then again, I very rarely listen to it. I understand what you're saying about the difference between the less popular bands and the mainstream ones. Nightwish is one of the most incredible bands I, personally, have ever heard.. and you know, NO ONE I know has ever heard of them. But I also think that Evanescence is another one of the most incredible bands I've ever listened to, and every other person I talk to knows who they are. So, I dunno... I guess it just depends on how you view a specific band.
Around here we have a 'Metal/Rock" Radio station. It plays the mainstream heavy stuff. I still do not enjoy Evanescence, but I guess that is personal opinion. As for Nightwish, they are getting increasingly popular in Europe, but have yet to make a significant mark in America. It would be nice if they got a bit better known, so their merchandise and cds were easier to find, but that comes with time.

Well I like some of both I guess. I like most rock, just not the kind where the singer is yelling (most hard metal types I guess). And I don't like hardcore rap where the main chorus includes drugs, and violence directed towards women and hookers, that type of rap.

Generally, i think rap is the shittiest, most nonmusical genre of music ever conceived by man. Personally, I'm a rock guy- At the Drive In, the Mars Volta, the Blood Brothers, Broken Social Scene, Modest Mouse, the Pixies, etc. Even rock has its bad parts to it though. I think stuff like metal and ska give rock a bad name. I do agree that the radio sucks. 95% of what's played on the radio is garbage (and I don't mean the band). There are exceptions to every genre though. I don't like rap, but there are a few rappers that are good as far as rappers go. There are also a lot of bad rock bands. That's just my opinion.

I think rap is entertaining, but i think it's more 'entertainment' than music. I've produced alot of hiphop stuff for boston artists, and recorded a few dozen rappers. That being said, the music never 'gets to me' nor do I ever see it's songwriting as being brilliant and captivating. Sometimes funny and sometims entertaining, but not amazing work like Simon and Garfunkle. Maybe someday rap will reach this level, but it has yet to do so. Rap seems to either be about God, How life is Hard, Bitches, Guns, Cars, Keeping it Real, Sex and Parties. Not saying all rock is deeper. i mean one of the greatest rockers ever Brian Wilson joked that he would never write music that wasn't about The Beach/Surfing, Girls or Cars. That being said, some of the Beach Boys is just simply beautiful. No rappers have made such music yet.
