I actually went on a mission trip to Pine Ridge. (This is where Wounded Knee is) We learned a lot of stuff that isn't really in the history books.

My classes just started and among them is history of American literature. We started off with some letters by Columbus and a text by Bartolome de las Casas (a guy who at that time advocated true Christian treatment of the American natives). Suffice it to say that the text made me think of holocaust.

Funny thing is, they scalped people as trophies, the appearance of White scalps (with blond, red, brown, or dark brown hair) were particularly prized, being outstanding compared to the pitch black haired scalps the Amerinds were more normally used to taking from each other. Also, cannibalism was common among Amerinds. The full extent of these practices was noted by many early writers, with the most complete and detailed account of Amerind cannibalism and the habit of torturing White prisoners of both sexes appearing in the print in 1892 in The Works of Francis Parkman.
In reality, it was Whites trying to settle into the lands. Once the Amerinds saw this, they attacked, knowing it would threaten their culture, society, civilization, and way of life. The only thing is - they were nothing compared to the marvels of the Europeans - clothes, steel, guns, mirrors, jewelry, copper, brass kettles and thousands of other things completely unknown to the native peoples of North America. And, of course, the horse.
The thought that Whites came to the Americas and simply slaughtered all nonWhites is a load of shit.
