for those of you on low calorie diets

If you are on a low calorie diet, say around 700 cals, do you find it difficult to monitor your intake and stay within your selected range?  It seems like it would be difficult to know just how many calories you are actually taking in, especially when eating "homemade" foods, such as a salad or a bowl of homemade soup.

So, how do you keep track of the calories and does it get easier to monitor the longer you do it?

note- I'm not planning on cutting my calories that drastically.  I'm simply curious.

Things that are "homemade" have the same ingredients as those made in a factory. Some if not most homemade food is healthier than the store-bought imitation because your homemade food hasn't been genetically modified.

For example, if your mom makes cookies from scratch, that means all the ingredients she uses to make the cookies like flour, eggs and sugar - all have calories. They can easily be found online. (:

Well, I can't say I'm really on a low calorie diet...I just eat fewer calories than most people.

I used to be able to live off of about 500 before the hypoglycemia.
Low-calorie diets aren't always the way to go.  The less you eat, the more your body will hang onto those calories.  It's not very good for your metabolism either.
It's not that hard to know if a food you're eating is high- or low-calorie, but monitoring never gets any easier.

That's why it's best to just develop healthy eating habits instead of "dieting."

yes, but isnt that a pain in the ass?  The most you could do is estimate since you dont exactly how much of what ingredient ends up in each serving of whatever you made.

I did find a very extensive list that has the caloric content of many foods, but my god, i dont want to have to look at that thing every time I eat a dinner that my mom made.

(This is from my day)I just look at every nutrition facts(labels) on foods. I may drink one soda a day and that's about 140 calories just that.. A diet one has like half of that I think. Then I take for lunch like a gronala bar which has about 60 colories(i'm guessing) with a tea, and together that's about 180 calories for lunch. For breakfast I eat an egg I don't thin that has any calories. Then for dinner I eat whatever and just total up the calories. Then I go walking/jogging for about an hour and burn hopefully half of it off and thats what I do. It's worked so far. 20 pounds lossed now doing this!

I'm just going by what I do personally, but I limit myself to certain foods. I know how many calories these foods contain and that's what I eat, to keep it at a minimum. Fruits, veggies, soups, etc. I'm in a routine and I know how many calories the foods I eat have (through looking at packaging, looking online, all that). It has gotten much easier to monitor through time, yes.

The LEAST amount of calories any granola bar will have is around 80-100, and those are the HEALTHIEST varieties. Unsweetened tea actually has 0 calories. And a large egg, yolk included, can have up to 80 calories, but egg whites alone have 20 or less.

its easy done
and for home made things, you weigh everything and add up all the calories in the total batch of what you make, then divide it by how many serves come out of it

Eggs have 20 calories for the whites... 80-100 in yolk
