Is it digital photography? I have a Canon Rebel Digital 3.5 mm SLR camera and it's realllyyy nice. It's like 800 bucks tho and my drug and alcohol therapist bought it for me bc I'm trying to recover from addiction and keep myself busy but I really like it a lot. It works very well and it takes very high quality photos. I would personally go with that. Otherwise I'd go with any type of Canon or Nikon. They're very good cameras.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ might have better deals than amazon.

I got a great rebate and deal on my SLR there a few yrs back. Better than whatever amazon was offering at the time.

You'll want to avoid the everyday point and shoot types, and step it up to a DSLR. There's several out there that are rather nice and easy to use, especially if you're used to a film SLR camera (if not, it just takes time and practice to get used to one).

Good thing is you'll get some rather excellent images.
Bad thing is that the cheapest DSLR is still up in the hundreds price range.

In the end however, you'll be paying just as much for film, development, and equipment for both types- digital and non-digital.

Most schools right now don't really care if it's digital or not, so you should still be able to get away with using a film camera- an SLR. I would talk to the school about it first and find out if that is possible (though it should be) and how they would like for it to be displayed in your portfolio.

If you are looking for a good quality picture from an in expensive camera, try the Nikon coolpics 10MB.  It takes great pictures.

What kind of camera do you currently own?

Kodak Easyshare c300

It's simple, straightforward. I got it for my 12th birthday or so, because I was very into taking pictures at the beach.

My mom still has a film SLR lying around somewhere, but i'm afraid that I need something digital, because I need to see how my pictures turn out right away.

That's a habit you're probably going to have to try and break. If anything, just ask your mom if you could borrow it so you can make yourself familiar with the settings and such. If you're going to teach yourself how to use, go to the library and borrow some books on cameras- the Books for Dummies series are rather good for beginners. It doesn't hurt to just play around a little bit. Just remember that when you develop your pictures, you are able to go through them and pick the ones you like over the ones you hate. Places like Wal-Mart allows you to do this and whatever you don't want, they subtract it from the total price and you will only pay for whats printed. So if you end up not liking anything at all, you won't have to pay for it.

You shouldn't be telling people to buy several hundred dollar cameras.  I mean, I make quite a bit of money, and I can't afford an expensive camera.

I would suggest you buy a cheaper camera that suits your needs.  Not everyone can afford a super expensive camera.

I always figure, if you aren't carrying around a light meter or a portable reflective screen, you aren't serious anyways. :)
