heroin was derived from morphine in the 1800s by a german scientist working for the good people at Bayer as a solution to opium and alcohol addictions. (it was of course, quickly discovered how bad of solution that was)

it has a faster onset of effects which are generally more potent and yes, euphoric.

that being said, heroin is far more addictive and the illegal nature of it means less quality control in the synthesis of it, which could mean you end up doing some real nasty dangerous shit.
