Read The Prince by Machiavelli, it's almost creepy how easily you can relate it to the modern world. The first 5 pages of the book explain the right and wrong ways to combat attrition(terrorism) in occupied lands. This has all happened before, just it wasn't the US, it was France, and it wasn't Iraq, it was Italy.

Anyways, some key points to his book.

-People will always hate the prince(leader), and elect a new one, whom they will learn to hate.(Bush, and the next president.)

-When you displace a goverment, make sure those irked are crushed to the point where revenge isn't a worry.(We let the Bath party continue after occupation)

-DO NOT KEEP GARRISONS IN OCCUPIED LANDS. KEEP ENOUGH TO DEFEND A COLONY IN THE TERRITORY. (HONESTLY, GREAT IDEA)

There's much more in his book, look into it, again, this text is ancient, proving history does repeat itself, and we are screwing up just like the French.

I can't stand the thought of becoming the French. Not only do they lose every War, they are a bunch of sissy's who happen to have great fashion.

What do you mean no one read it then or now?

It's a fairly famous book.

no one read it then

Which is precisely why Machiavelli is such a prominent historical figure whose primary work (The Prince) is studies in classrooms around the world even today, both as a piece of literature and for its historical significance.

Yes, people read it then, and yes, people read it now.
