you are right that it is about getting from point a to b with efficiency. the whole flips and tricking aspect is not parkour, that is called freerunning- which uses most of the same moves ie. vaults, kongs, climb ups etc , but also focuses on the aesthetics via the backflips and such. and to handsfree: this is a common misconception. on youtube most people first either see david belle, or some idiot kids who try to go roofjumping in imitation, which is where it gets the bad media and rep to those who have no clue about it. pk is about progression and to be doing what some of these experienced traceurs are doing it takes a ton of progression and starting small and repeating techniques until muscle memory kicks in, then repeat them some more, plus intense conditioning. you don't really see many vids with traceurs/traceusses training for pk, because face it, most people would find that boring and the only reason to tape it would be to check your own form, try to improve, etc.
"Everybody just watches it and pretends they can do it."
haha i completely agree. there are so many people who think just because they heard of it, or have seen it before, they know all about it. it's pretty annoying. it's cool to be a fan of it and never do it, but i really don't get why people would pretend.
