I started college three weeks ago and so far it's been going pretty well...until this morning. I come into class this math class morning and as soon as I walk in I hear this girl (who is African American) say really loudly, "how dare you talk about black people". I didn't think much of it until I see her looking right at me.
Now maybe it wasn't directed a me, but since she was looking at me I assumed that it was directed at me. It almost sounded like she was trying to pin me as a racist. The thing is, I'VE NEVER TALKED TO THIS GIRL!!!!EVER!
I didn't say anything back and sat in my seat. I sat there for a few minutes trying to think were she would get this idea that I would be racist.
The ONLY thing I said that could have led her to this conclusion is that in a PRIVATE conversation with my best friend in the cafe last Friday where both of us said we are afraid that if Obama becomes president that he would get assassinated because of the white supremacist groups that were still around. NEVER DID I OR MY FRIEND CONDONE THOSE GROUPS IN OUR STATEMENTS! I was expressing CONCERN for his well being, even if I don't agree with his political views.
Which means, SHE WAS EAVESDROPPING ON OUR CONVERSATION! Which is extremely rude in itself. Where she got the idea that I'm racist from that statement, I'll never know.
The thing is, it's bothering me because I don't really know if her comment was directed at me and to confront her would be somewhat disastrous. Also, I don't want her going around telling the other girls on campus that I'm a racist, when I'm not because that's a horrible thing to say about someone when you don't know them.
What should I do?
